Decorative stone in bathrooms

Stone-like materials can add texture and colour to a modern bathroom, but the term artificial stone includes different compositions. A cement-based wall tile is not interchangeable with a resin-based basin or a cast bathtub.

Decide which surface is being specified: a decorative wall away from direct water, a shower area, a floor or a sanitary fixture. Each needs its own assessment of water exposure, cleaning, slip resistance where relevant and supporting construction.

Cladding does not replace waterproofing. Coordinate the membrane, substrate, adhesive, joints and penetrations as a complete system. Confirm whether the chosen finish needs protection and whether it tolerates the intended cleaning products.

Compare samples under the bathroom lighting and check the texture at close range. A highly textured wall may be harder to clean. Obtain written suitability and care instructions for the specific product instead of relying on general descriptions such as waterproof or non-toxic.
