Coloured & Black Exposed Concrete: Colour and Care

Painting changes the appearance and future maintenance of an exposed-concrete surface. Before starting, decide whether a pigmented tile, a transparent protective treatment or an opaque coating best matches the design. Confirm compatibility with the concrete and any existing sealer.

Prepare the surface by removing loose dirt, unsound coatings and incompatible residues using approved methods. Investigate oil, moisture and salt deposits rather than painting over them. Let the substrate reach the coating manufacturer's required condition. Do not assume every concrete surface needs the same cleaner or moisture level.

Cracks and defects need assessment before repair. A coating is not a structural repair, and moving cracks can reappear. Use a compatible repair material and observe its curing period. Follow the coating system's requirements for primer, surface profile and adhesion testing.

Choose an interior or exterior coating rated for the actual exposure. Wall and floor coatings are not interchangeable. A generic sealer beneath paint can prevent adhesion if the products are incompatible, so use an approved system rather than combining products by guesswork.

Check the weather and permitted temperature and humidity. Apply the specified coverage and number of coats with appropriate tools. Recoat and full-cure times come from the actual product instructions and are not universally twenty-four hours.

Protect the finished area until cured and keep a record of the coating for future maintenance. Ventilate and follow the manufacturer's handling precautions. Approve a sample first, since paint may hide the natural variation and texture that originally made the exposed surface attractive.
