Cleaning decorative concrete stone

Dust and soot can settle on textured decorative stone and exposed concrete. Begin with the product's care instructions and identify any existing sealer or coating. A method suitable for one finish may discolour or damage another.

Protect the floor and nearby materials. Gather clean cloths, a soft brush, clean water and a mild compatible cleaner. Wear the protection specified by the cleaning-product manufacturer. Avoid aggressive acids, abrasive tools and excessive pressure unless the surface supplier explicitly approves them.

First remove loose dust. Test the proposed cleaner on a small inconspicuous area and let it dry before continuing. Use the minimum effective concentration and avoid saturating an interior wall or forcing water into electrical fittings and joints.

Work in manageable sections from top to bottom. Gently clean the surface, then remove cleaner residue with a separate clean damp cloth. Replace dirty water and cloths regularly so dirt is not redistributed. Repeated gentle cleaning is preferable to unapproved aggressive scrubbing.

Remove excess water and allow ventilation for drying. Residual detergent can attract dirt or leave marks. Persistent stains, efflorescence or repeated dampness need investigation of their cause before stronger treatment. Set the cleaning interval according to exposure rather than assuming a fixed schedule for every installation.
