Exposed concrete at Alborz Tunnel

The Alborz Tunnel is part of the Tehran–North freeway in the Alborz mountains. This case study presents Sadr Stone's account as the supplier of architectural concrete facing. According to the company's project archive, the order in 1398 SH involved approximately ten thousand square metres and cooperation with the main contractor, General Mechanic.
The documented locations include entrance and exit façades and curved interior wall areas. The material is a facing system, not a replacement for the tunnel's structural lining. The gallery on this website preserves the project images locally.
The mountain setting created several simultaneous requirements. The archive highlights cold weather and repeated wet freeze–thaw exposure, direct sunlight and the practical limits of transporting and installing materials in restricted work areas. These conditions make the complete fixing and drainage design as important as the visible tile.
The company's account describes a comparison of alternative facing materials and a contractor-led technical review before selection. It states that the supplied material came from the standard product range rather than a separate special formula. This is the supplier's published account, not an independent comparison or a public test certificate. A new project must verify its own specification.
Curved walls require careful setting out. Tile dimensions, joint rhythm and attachment details must follow the geometry, while allowing tolerances and movement. Transport, protected storage, handling and installation sequence affect both appearance and delivery. Access for later inspection and replacement should be considered at the design stage.
The archive describes the relationship with General Mechanic continuing into subsequent work. For a current list of references or documentary evidence of a particular project, request the relevant information from the sales team. An older article should not be used as proof of a site's present condition without an up-to-date inspection.
The wider lesson concerns whole-life cost. Material price is only part of the calculation: access, disruption, replacement and maintenance can be significant in road infrastructure. This does not prove that one finish is always cheaper, but it explains why performance and installation quality deserve attention alongside price.
Similar facing systems may be considered for other tunnels, bridges, transit facilities and infrastructure, subject to the project's engineering and fire-safety requirements. Domestic manufacture and repeatable production can be useful, but they do not remove the need for project-specific approval.
