Decorative stone around fireplaces

A fireplace often becomes the visual centre of a living room and a place around which seating is arranged. Decorative stone can help define that focus through colour, relief and the scale of the pieces. Different layouts can support a contemporary, rustic or more classical interior.

Separate the decorative surround from the firebox and flue. A cement-based or stone-like appearance does not establish suitability for direct flame or high temperatures. The fireplace manufacturer's clearances and the designer's approved construction details must govern the assembly.

Review the facing, adhesive, substrate, joints and any protective finish as a system. Heat cycles can cause movement, and neighbouring materials such as wood require suitable separation. Do not assume that an ordinary wall adhesive is approved for a heated location.

Wood-effect concrete may provide a timber-like appearance where that aesthetic is desired, but it is not an automatic fire-rated substitute for timber. Its actual thermal exposure and fixing still need approval. Coordinate corners, mantel details and access for servicing before installation.

Approve a sample with the room's lighting and furniture. For an existing fireplace, have the condition and requirements of the appliance and surrounding construction checked before changing its cladding. Good appearance should follow a properly specified assembly.
